Patagonia a vast region located in Southern America covering most of the southern portion of Argentina and a little part of Chile.

The name of the region was coined due to the explorer Magellan’s description of the people living in the region. He used the word patagon to signify the giant-like size of the natives.

The total land area of this region is approximately 900,000 square kilometers, including the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego.

Patagonia is famous for its rugged yet breathtaking scenery which is perfect for those into hiking and other more adventurous sports.

It is a favorite destination from backpackers to the more upscale travelers.

It is not a place where those who want all the comforts and the noise of a big city since there are no big cities in the region. However, there are big ski resorts including the posh Bariloche located in the Argentinian Andes where you can find everything a first-class tourist resort has to offer. The main attractions of the Patagonia region are, as mentioned before, related to more outdoorsy activities.

Some of the main attractions include:

Tierra del Fuego – Tierra del Fuego boasts the southernmost city in the world – Ushuaia.

Los Glaciares National Park – A world heritage site, the glacier Perito Moreno is 200 feet high, 3 miles wide, and 22 miles long.

Valdes Peninsula – The peninsula boasts of wonderful unspoilt beaches where you can spot exotic animals such as whales, elephant seals, and sea lions.

Torres del Paine National Park – Considered to be the most stunning of all the national parks located in the Patagonia region it is a must in anyone’s itinerary. It boasts of a dizzyingly diverse wildlife and flora and fauna.

Argentine Lake District

Patagonia is derived from the word Patagon, a term used by Magellan to describe the native people whom he thought as giants during his expedition. Today, it is believed that Patagons were actually Tehuelches and Aonikenk who have an average height of 1.8 m, much taller compared to an average Spaniard during that time who typically stands around 1.55m.

Patagonia has a wide domain. It covers the provinces of Nuquen, Rio Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego in Argentina. In the south, it covers the provinces of Buenos Aires, Mendoza and La Pampa. The Chilean portion includes the Southern part of the region of Los Lagos, Aysen and Magallanes.

Patagonia is rich in marine fossils, dinosaur remains and other pre-historic relics.
